Smartphones take great pictures, but if you want to earn serious money with your photographs, you will want to invest in a quality digital camera. As the technology has advanced, the price for a basic digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR) has come down. Even so, you should expect to pay between $300 and $600 for one.
A digital camera is especially important if you want to enlarge your photos for sale. The quality of smartphone photos just does not compare when you blow up a photo to 11″ x 14″.
You will probably want to invest in some accessories down the road, like a tripod, a camera case, and additional lenses. At a minimum, spend some money on a good camera.

If you are not on social media, very few people will know about your business and will not be able to find your beautiful photographs. Two-thirds of adults in the U.S. are Facebook users, and roughly three-quarters of them access Facebook every day. A Facebook page is a necessary tool for promoting your business and selling your photos online.
Instagram is another important social media tool for photographers. In fact, Instagram started as a way for people to share their photos with family and friends.
You might also consider establishing a LinkedIn profile as a way to connect with current and potential clients.
If you are simply looking for a way to sell the photos you took with your smartphone, some of the better-known companies may buy them. Shutterstock pays a small fee to photographers for their images, typically $0.25 a photo.
